That's ok cause none of us does it the same way. I'd say the best lesson one can learn from Vonnegut is that being completely true to your own voice is the goal, the only goal ultimately. There are all sorts of side goals about getting published and finding an audience for one's work, but while the work is going on the goal is being as honestly yourself as you can handle.

I can't say I agree with the anvil metaphor though. I love to write; writing is the only time in my day when I feel strong, capable, able to handle life. Yeah, it's hard work; that's why I need to love it. If I didn't love it I wouldn't come back to it, even when it sucks.Lisa Dhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02273745626294070401noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4178357988504785712.post-48082125382812859462010-04-22T14:27:23.633+01:002010-04-22T14:27:23.633+01:00It's really hard not to pick up the tone of au...It's really hard not to pick up the tone of authors you really like. I hear myself thinking like Jane Austen for weeks after I've finished with her.

Nerd note: Technically it's a bladesmith who makes swords. It's a highly specialized art. Blacksmiths make anything made of iron, which could be a sword, but in most villages wouldn't have been.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10646815333491492378noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4178357988504785712.post-20251860070417547872010-04-21T19:50:31.952+01:002010-04-21T19:50:31.952+01:00I'm willing to audition for the post of person...I'm willing to audition for the post of person to be written to.
